INFERTILITY AND LAPAROSCOPIC GYNAECOLOGY

Overview

"Laparoscopy" typically encompass a range of specialized medical services focused on the diagnosis and treatment of infertility issues and gynecological conditions using laparoscopic surgical techniques. Here are some common services associated with this field:

  • Infertility Evaluation: This involves a comprehensive assessment of both partners to identify potential factors contributing to infertility. Diagnostic tests may include hormone testing, semen analysis, ovarian reserve testing, hysterosalpingography (HSG), and ultrasound imaging.
  • Ovulation Induction: For women with ovulation disorders, medications may be prescribed to stimulate ovulation and improve the chances of conception. This may involve the use of oral medications such as clomiphene citrate or injectable gonadotropins.
  • Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): IUI involves placing washed and concentrated sperm directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation to enhance the chances of fertilization. It is often used as a treatment for couples with unexplained infertility or mild male factor infertility.
  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): IVF is a fertility treatment where eggs are retrieved from the ovaries, fertilized with sperm in a laboratory dish, and the resulting embryos are transferred into the uterus. IVF may be recommended for couples with more complex infertility issues, such as tubal factor infertility, severe male factor infertility, or unexplained infertility.
  • Laparoscopic Surgery: Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to diagnose and treat various gynecological conditions that may contribute to infertility, such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and pelvic adhesions. Laparoscopic surgery offers advantages such as smaller incisions, shorter recovery times, and reduced postoperative pain compared to traditional open surgery.
  • Hysteroscopic Surgery: Hysteroscopy is another minimally invasive procedure used to evaluate and treat abnormalities within the uterine cavity, such as polyps, fibroids, uterine septum, or intrauterine adhesions. It may be performed in conjunction with laparoscopic surgery for comprehensive evaluation and treatment of infertility-related issues.
  • Reproductive Endocrinology: Reproductive endocrinologists specialize in the diagnosis and management of hormonal disorders affecting fertility, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and hypothalamic-pituitary axis abnormalities.
  • Genetic Testing and Counseling: Genetic testing may be recommended for couples with a history of genetic disorders or recurrent pregnancy loss. Genetic counseling helps couples understand their risk factors and make informed decisions about family planning options, including preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) for embryos during IVF.
