MINIMAL INVASIVE SURGERY

Overview

"Minimally invasive surgery (MIS)" also known as minimally invasive surgery (MIS) or laparoscopic surgery, refers to surgical techniques that minimize the size of incisions needed for surgical procedures. Here are some common services associated with minimal invasive surgery:

  • Laparoscopic Surgery: This technique involves making small incisions (keyhole incisions) through which specialized surgical instruments and a camera (laparoscope) are inserted into the body. Surgeons use real-time video images from the camera to guide the surgical procedure. Laparoscopic surgery can be used for various procedures, including gallbladder removal (laparoscopic cholecystectomy), appendectomy, hernia repair, and gastric bypass surgery.
  • Thoracoscopic Surgery: Thoracoscopic or video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is used for procedures within the chest cavity. It involves inserting a thoracoscope and surgical instruments through small incisions between the ribs to perform surgeries such as lung biopsy, lung resection, and treatment of pleural effusion.
  • Robotic-Assisted Surgery: Robotic surgery combines minimally invasive techniques with robotic technology. Surgeons control robotic arms equipped with surgical instruments to perform precise movements with enhanced dexterity. Robotic-assisted surgery can be used for various procedures, including prostatectomy, hysterectomy, and colorectal surgery.
  • Endoscopic Surgery: Endoscopic procedures involve using a thin, flexible tube with a camera and surgical instruments (endoscope) to visualize and treat internal organs through natural body openings or small incisions. Endoscopic surgery can be used for procedures such as gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, colonoscopy, and sinus surgery.
  • Interventional Radiology: Interventional radiologists use imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT scans, and fluoroscopy to guide minimally invasive procedures. These procedures may include angioplasty, stent placement, embolization, and tumor ablation.
  • Gynecological and Urological Procedures: Minimally invasive techniques are commonly used in gynecological and urological surgeries, including hysterectomy, myomectomy, prostatectomy, and kidney stone removal.
  • Orthopedic Surgery: Some orthopedic procedures, such as arthroscopy for joint surgery, spine surgery, and fracture fixation, can be performed using minimally invasive techniques.
  • Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery: Minimally invasive techniques are also used in cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures, including facial rejuvenation (e.g., facelift, eyelid surgery), body contouring (e.g., liposuction), and breast augmentation or reduction.
